Bacteria and Archaea are made up of prokaryotic cells.

Prokaryotic Cells
  • Prokaryotic cells lack a nucleus. DNA is coiled into nucleoid (which is a region like a nucleus)
  • DNA is in direct contact with the entire cell
  • Plasma membrane encloses cytoplasm around which is a bacterial wall. This wall protects the cell and helps it keep its shape.
  • Prokaryotic cells contain Pili (pilus) which help the bacteria latch on to a surface
  • Prokaryotic flagellum propels cell through water.
