Breast Cancer Genetics

Inheriting certain genetic mutations (on BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes) can increase someone's risk of developing breast cancer, although you cannot inherit a gene that guarantees that you develop the disease. In fact, most breast cancers actually result from somatic mutations that occur during someone's life. Mutations of the BRCA1 gene occur at the chromosomal locus17q21, while those on the BRCA2 gene occur at the chromosomal locus 13q12.3.
